A while back, content curation caught on and for a couple of months that all I heard people talking about. The noise seems to have died down now. Fewer people are talking about it, so the newness of the idea must have worn off. The novelty is gone. The sparkle has disappeared.

Does that mean that content curation is worthless?

Don’t bet on it. Content curation actually has its place. Very few people use it as their primary business model, but it can easily be implemented into any business model, and it’s cheaper than creating your own content over and over again. It’s not quite as time consuming either, if you do it right.

Content curation is simply using other people’s content in such a way that you encourage your audience to consume it for its value.

With content curation, you are essentially saying that you’re not the only person or company creating content worth reading about your niche topic. You see value in other people’s content. Therefore, so should they. But how does that benefit you?

By recommending other people’s content, you establish yourself as an expert authority in your field. There can be no greater value than being seen as an authority in your niche. Sharing valuable content created by others can do that for you. That alone is reason enough to become a content curator. And we haven’t even talked about SEO.

StumbleUpon is rolling out a new beta look. The interesting thing about this is that the new look closely resembles Pinterest, which shouldn’t be a surprise because that look obviously works.

StumbleUpon has gone through several changes over the years, some of them good and some of them not so good. I have to say that I like the Pinterest look and feel and I hope they keep it.

One of the things that I like about it is you have an activity wall that you can check on, so you no longer have to rely on your friends notifying you of new Stumbles. You can just check your activity wall, which I find a lot less annoying. And you can check on the Stumbles that interest you rather than being interrupted to look at Stumbles you might not be ready to look at right now.

I also think you can find interesting Stumbles and then pin them to your Pinterest boards, which should help you on both services.

Social media, like everything else online, is changing. There’s no wonder that Pinterest has grown into a bigger network than StumbleUpon. If StumbleUpon is to remain relevant, they have to adopt to the changes taking place online. That’s what I think this beta is all about.

If you understand your Klout score, you are in the minority. Nevertheless, despite Klout scores not being widely accepted – or at least looked at with skepticism – Bing is displaying Klout scores on its “People Who Know” bar.

Bing is doing everything it can to gain a competitive advantage over chief rival and search dominator Google. Most of it isn’t working. So why would anyone think adding Klout scores will work?

Maybe Bing doesn’t think Klout scores will give it the edge it needs to gain more search share, but that’s what they’re doing anyway. And I have to say that it won’t make me use Bing any more than I already do.

I think Bing’s search results are not bad. For the most part, they rival Google’s pretty well. But it’s important for marketers to understand that your job is to get your website indexed in the search engines and optimized for the best search results. Social signals are becoming a lot more important to help you make that happen. Klout may not be a perfect way to measure social influence, but it might be getting more difficult to ignore.

I wouldn’t say you should put your Klout score at the top of your priority list right now, but it’s looking more and more like that’s what you’re going to have to end up doing. I hope you’re ready.
